Theme: Islands

Theme: Islands

Okay time to make a game in a weekend. At first I wasn’t going to do LD17 but then I realised I could use the engine I’m building for university work. This synergy means the times not wasted, synergy in real life. Besides it will give my lagging progress a much needed oomph.

So I woke up to the theme of islands. My first thought was… Aaaah NO!

Then I started thinking about the cellular automata system I used for the last LD to generate caverns. The system could be adapted from making a single connected cavern to disconnected islands.

Of course I need to use my university engine which is 3D which made me think. Oh I could have islands built of blocks. This is to fit into the graphics pipeline and make them work in 3D. Give them depth so you have floating Ice Berg situation.

This sounded good but then I took the idea further. Polar coordinates with relative gravity. A few stumbling blocks came up with bricks (pun intended). So then I thought go Balls! Then I though how the hell to get a 3D cellular automata, and also that I want hollow planet so to speak.

So then I though polar coordinates means through a bias based on radius using a sine graph or similar. Then wham BAM I got it.

[72 Hour] Progress Report 6

16 hours, 15 minutes, and 45 seconds

For me however there is no time remaining. As I need to go to sleep and then get to work.

I achieved everything I aimed for. Flags, holes, even got the isometric working. Admittedly its still rough around the edges. I am however rather proud of my creation. That's why I love doing these comps they make you feel good about yourself. Yet at the same time show you an accurate measure of your skill and ability.

Oh well Edge is going to design a few maps for me and then well its pretty much over. Chow chow all.

[72 Hour] Progress Report 5

Oo looks the same

THERE ARE 1 days, 0 hours, 0 minutes, and 59 seconds left!

Considering I'll be at work for 6 of those hours, call it 6 hours sleep..... hmm that leave me with 12 HOURS!!!

What have I done so far, well I've decided 2:1 diamond isometric with a left aligned point is the spawn of Satan and should have never been conceived. Other than that its been pretty productive.

  • ISO-Ball motion is smooth but buggy
  • Added Start and End to levels
  • Added Timer
  • Added Gold, Bronze, Silver award times.
  • Added Menu system.
  • Added High Scores.
  • Made pause mode editable.

All in all I'm a one woman coding army of destruction!

[72 Hour] Progress Report 4

There are only 1 days, 18 hours, 10 minutes, and 40 seconds remaining

I am the Queen of all I CODE!

Okay I've thrown the old FLAT render back in cause its relible and its a safe fall back all the time. However I've cleaned up the ISO mode as well, its not perfect. The ball is grid locked in ISO at the moment and the cursor doesn't relate to the world. HOWEVER you can flip between the two with a single button push. I see a strong way ahead.

[72 Hour] Progress Report 3

1 days, 21 hours, 6 minutes, and 47 seconds

So it took me all of 1 hour or so to add, a map editor with loading and saving. Not to mention collision detection and smooth out the kinks in the gravity equation. Oh and did I mention visualize the field.

Then someone says, make it isometric. So happy little programmer I am I say, SURE!

Its now 8 hours later....

My isometric junk is horribly broken, and still not quite working. What is the moral of the story here. Don't try learn something new IN THE MIDDLE OF A COMPETITION! I'm having dinner now, going back to flat. Working out some things then making one LAST attempt at isometric.

[72 Hour] Progress Report 2

Progress 2

There are only 2 days, 6 hours, 15 minutes, and 47 seconds remaining.

Just woke up. The prototype is working nice and fine. It wasn't a dream from the early ours of the morning :)

Next Goal is to add collisions!

After that I will need to look at making a save/load map function so Edge can start making maps. Up Up and Away

[72 Hour] Progress Report

Progress Report

There are only 2 days, 15 hours, 8 minutes, and 16 seconds remaining.

Okay well the Theme is MAGNETS! Which I'm really happy for. I teamed up with Edge he is going to be my artist. I got the theme ran off to Kendo and got back, so I missed the first 5 hours or so of the comp. What do I have running so far.

  • GUI UP
  • Draw Scrollable Map
  • Draw Mini Map
  • Scroll Map
  • Relate Mouse to Game Board Pos
  • Calc Field Equation for any point on board
  • Full 2D Vector Class

I'm proud of how much I've got done. I'm moving a lot faster than last Ludum Dare. Edge and I are still hankering over a game idea but the framework is good for both ideas. Personally I think the Marble one is a strong idea though. Oh well I need to catch some shut eye so see you all in the morning.
